YUCK!

“The Poetics of Shame”

A Generative Poetry Workshop

with Hunter Hodkinson

YUCK! is a generative drop-in workshop where students have the opportunity to write about shame in an anonymous and interactive setting.

The class begins with each student writing one of their "disgusting habits" on a piece of paper and dropping it in a hat.

As a class we will then read a poem that seems "yucky" on paper, but has a deeper connective tissue towards the universal. My favorite example is Justin Chin's "Lick My Butt".

After reading and discussing the provided poem, students will then retrieve someone else's slip of paper from the hat, and will spend the remaining class time writing a poem about the other person's "disgusting habit."

As a writer and listener, this gives students the opportunity to interact with their shame in an objective way. The last 5-10 minutes of class, students will have the opportunity to share their poems with each other.
